My SFX slushy machine isn't freezing — diagnosis guide

This guide is for SFX range slushy machines (SFX1, SFX2, SFX3). If you have an older SFG range machine, see the SFG diagnosis guide instead.

A slushy machine that runs but does not freeze is a common support call. In most cases, the cause is one of six things — and most of them you can check and fix in under ten minutes without any tools.

Work through these checks in order. If you get to the end of the list and the machine is still not freezing, the next step is to contact Snow Flow.

1. Check the mix ratio

This is a frequent cause. Always check the label on your specific product for the correct mix ratio. Snow Flow Slushy Syrup is 1 part syrup to 4 parts water (1:4). Fruchilla Slushy Syrup is 1 part syrup to 5 parts water (1:5). Powdered slushy mixes vary by brand and product — always check the label. A mix that is too high in sugar may not freeze properly — it can stay too soft to dispense.

Common situations where this goes wrong:

  • The mix was prepared at a stronger ratio to make it taste better
  • A new staff member topped up the bowl with undiluted concentrate
  • The water was measured incorrectly

Fix: Drain the bowl completely. Rinse it out. Prepare a fresh batch at the correct ratio for your product. Refill and restart.

If you are not sure whether the mix in the bowl is at the right ratio, drain it and start fresh. There is no reliable way to test the sugar content in-bowl without a refractometer.

2. Check the ambient temperature

The SFX range is rated to operate in ambient temperatures between 5°C and 32°C. Outside that range — particularly above 32°C in summer — the machine will struggle to reach serving consistency. This is not a fault; it is the machine running outside its rated conditions.

This comes up often in:

  • School canteens in summer
  • Outdoor events and marquees
  • Kitchens or serveries that heat up significantly during service
  • Small storerooms with poor ventilation

Fix: Move the machine to a cooler location or lower the ambient temperature with air conditioning or ventilation.

3. Check the ventilation clearance

SFX machines do not need any clearance on the left or right — they can sit flush against a wall or other equipment on either side. At the rear, leave a minimum of 15cm so air can flow out from the back of the machine. If the rear is blocked — by a wall, another appliance, or a fitted shelf — the machine will overheat and stop freezing.

Fix: Reposition the machine so it has at least 15cm clearance at the rear. If it has been running with restricted airflow for some time, let it cool down for 30 minutes before restarting.

4. Check the dust filter at the base

Your SFX machine has a dust filter at the base. Air is drawn in from underneath the machine to cool the refrigeration system, and the filter stops dust and debris from getting inside. If the filter is clogged, airflow is restricted — the machine runs hot and may stop freezing.

This is a leading cause in:

  • School canteens, where chalk dust and fine particulates accumulate quickly
  • Dusty environments like markets, outdoor events, and food halls
  • Machines that have not had the filter cleaned for several months

Fix: Turn the machine off and unplug it. Remove the dust filter from the base, rinse it with clean water, let it dry, then refit. Plug in and restart.

The condenser itself sits behind the filter and is not a customer-cleanable part. If the machine still struggles after cleaning the filter, the condenser may need attention — submit a support ticket and Snow Flow will arrange a service visit. Do not attempt to access the condenser yourself.

5. Check the control panel mode and gear setting

The SFX control panel has four working modes: ICE (slushy), COOL (cold liquid), CLN (clean), and STOP. If the machine is in COOL, CLN, or STOP mode, it will not produce slushy product even though it appears to be running.

The gear setting (1–7) controls product consistency. Gear 1 produces a softer, more liquid result; gear 7 produces a thicker, firmer slushy. If the gear is set very low, the product may appear not to be freezing when it is actually just set for a loose consistency.

Fix: Confirm the display shows ICE mode. If not, press the bowl button to cycle to ICE mode. For standard slushy, gears 2–3 are recommended.

6. Check that the bowl agitator is turning

The agitator keeps the product moving so it freezes evenly. If it has stopped, the mix may freeze solid in patches or stay liquid in the centre. The SFX manual notes that blocked ice inside the bowl can lock the agitator — if so, switch the machine off and allow the ice to melt before restarting.

How to check: Watch the bowl while the machine is running in ICE mode. The agitator should be turning slowly and steadily.

Fix: If the agitator is locked by ice, switch off and allow the ice to melt — do not force it. If the agitator is not turning and there is no ice blockage, there is a mechanical fault. Turn the machine off and submit a support ticket.

When to contact Snow Flow

If you have worked through all the checks above and the machine is still not freezing, submit a support ticket or call your local Snow Flow office. Our team can diagnose remotely and arrange the right next step — whether that is a service visit, a part, or a warranty claim.

Do not attempt to open the refrigeration panels yourself. This voids the warranty and, if the machine is within 12 months of purchase, a warranty claim is the correct path.

Submit a support ticket with the following information:

  • Your machine model (SFX1, SFX2, or SFX3)
  • What you have already checked (from this list)
  • How long the issue has been happening
  • The ambient temperature where the machine is located
  • What the control panel display is showing

Alternatively, call your local Snow Flow office directly. If the machine is down during trading hours, select "Machine down — urgent" on the support ticket form and we will prioritise your case.
